Raising a Human - Part 2

… continuation of Raising a Human - Part 1

How to Survive First Weeks & Months

Some people have more kids and they glide through the parenthood almost with ease. Other people survive from one day to anther and think twice about having more kids. 😅

To my understanding, that's because there are basically two kinds of kids - easy (~80%) and challenging (~20%). To understand better, check “Raising Your Spirited Child“ or “The Highly Sensitive Child“ books.

My point is - everyone is different and some kids give you big lessons and some are easy going. Naturally, the need to learn from the following books may be different among different parents.

Trust Your Instincts

I want to encourage you - if you feel that something is not right with your baby, please don't be shy, don't feel stupid and ask and keep asking even if they keep telling you that you're just a tired mum (happened to me). Trust your instincts - you are mum, you know the best and you care the most.

Sleep!

Book 3: Precious Little Sleep: The Complete Baby Sleep Guide for Modern Parents

By far the best book on the topic. If you read this, you don't need to read any other. And it's so much fun to read it (even when you are sleep deprived).

Informs, gives you choice, doesn't judge you, supports you and gives you very very practical step by step guides to almost every situation related to sleep.

Book 4: The Happiest Baby on the Block

This book is very nice too, however there is significantly less information than in the previous one. If you can read the one above, read it and skip this one.

From some reason, it seems to be translated to more languages so it's more accessible for mums and dads who don't speak English very well.

Understand Baby Brain

Book 5: The Wonder Weeks

Some days, babies are like angels. Some days, they are like badgers. No matter what you do - seriously, not your fault. This books explains why and when to expect which stage.

It also very nicely lists skills that kids develop in different stages.

I loved to read it to know what to look for, how to encourage her and to comfort myself that her screaming was not may fault in particular weeks.

It is very repetitive sometimes. But it worths reading anyway.

Book 6: Brain Rules for Baby

If you want to raise smart and happy person and you are scientifically oriented, read this one. It explains the science in a very friendly and non-scientific way - what to do, what to avoid.

It also gives some practical tips, however it may not be enough for everyone (see more practical books below).

Book 7: Elevating Child Care

If you are rather intuitive and loving person than scientist, take this one. It gives you a nice general approach which is aligned with the science (book above).
