Finding My Style

I’m struggling with it. I guess it’s normal. I just don’t seem to have a strong consistent style. I know what I don’t like. But otherwise… I always do what I think is best for the picture. Why would I use a particular style if it doesn’t fit the picture? Yet, some people have pictures and their style fits them all. Something to learn…

There are so many people around who want to have a style. They download a preset (filter) and mindlessly apply it all the pictures. Yes, it has a united style, but otherwise it sucks because the pictures are actually not as nice as they could be.

I don’t want to do this. Yes, sometimes I apply a pre-fabricated filter. It’s to help me to figure out the right style for the picture and I modify it then. I use it as an inspiration only and I have a set of my favourite filters, not just one.

I know, I’m therefore in the other group of struggling photographers - not having much style. And that may look equally uninteresting.

So, how to get to the tiny group of photographers who are in between, who have consistent style and awesome pictures?

I don’t know. I assume that I’ll keep experimenting and the style will gradually become visible - as if you boil a broth, you keep boiling, until the flavour get concentrated enough. There are ways around - like a cube of instant broth, but it’s never equally good.

I believe that I’m right because I am starting to notice some signs of actually having a bit of my own style! I like taking pictures of nature and portraits. For nature, I love long exposures to show the calmness and beauty of it. I prefer minimalistic composures. For portraits, I like super sharp eyes and cooler colours, natural smiles. I like colours.

Let’s see if it gets me there. Have you already found your style? How did you do it? How long has it taken? Do you think that I have the right approach?
